1. What is sound design? What are the responsibilities of the sound designer?

Sound design is the overall creation and organization of all sound in a movie.

A sound designer is responsible for planning, recording, and combining all the sounds in a film, including dialogue, music, and effects. They help decide how sound is used to support the story, mood, and meaning of the film.

2. What is the difference between diegetic and nondiegetic sources of sound?

  • Diegetic sound is sound that comes from the world of the film. The characters can hear it (like dialogue, footsteps, or a radio).
  • Nondiegetic sound is sound that the characters cannot hear. It is added for the audience, like background music or narration.

3.  How do ambient sounds differ from sound effects? How are Foley sounds different from sound
effects?

  • Ambient sounds are background sounds that come from a location, like wind, traffic, or room noise. They help create atmosphere.
  • Sound effects are specific sounds added to a movie, like explosions or doors slamming.
  • Foley sounds are sound effects that are created and recorded in sync with the film, often using everyday objects to recreate actions like footsteps or clothing movement.

4. One interesting thing from Chapter 9

One interesting idea is that many sounds in movies are not recorded during filming but are added later in postproduction to make the scene feel more realistic.

I found this interesting because it shows that what we hear in a movie is carefully built and controlled, not just naturally captured.
